Wisconsin River Trail Updates and Grants
This year’s banquet is also a time to celebrate WRTO’s incredible progress on trail development in the Wisconsin River Valley. Thanks to a $2.1 million Department of Transportation TAP STAR grant and a boost to $640,000 from the Knowles-Nelson grant, WRTO is taking big steps toward building more accessible and beautiful outdoor trails.
We know you’ve been waiting patiently, but trail building doesn’t happen overnight. Phase 2A construction is scheduled to start in 2027, and Phase 2B, which will extend the trail into Woodman, is planned for 2028. It’s been a slow(ish) climb, but with your support, we’re getting closer to realizing the dream of a seamless hiking and biking trail connecting our communities.
Big Plans for the Future
With the addition of Bruce Pierce and Peter Qualey to the WRTO Board, we’re taking a fresh look at the best options for creating the hiking and biking trail we’ve all been dreaming of. Bruce and Peter are Boscobel natives, and we’re excited about the ideas and energy they’re bringing to the team.
We’ve also been having conversations with the National Park Service Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program (NPS RTCA) to explore possible alternative trail routes. The goal is to find paths that highlight the Driftless Area’s beautiful Wisconsin River valley while creating an easier path to timely construction.
Our grant application for this program will be submitted on March 1, 2024, and we’re hopeful this collaboration could help bring our vision to life. Let’s just say this board isn’t getting any younger—we’re determined to make this trail happen!
